With a colossal list of active users, Facebook is now the undisputed symbol of pop culture.  While many among us use Facebook to bare their souls to the world, hardly anyone has the time to get to know things about the thing that lets them do that.  Well, Facebook is here to bare its soul to you.  Facebook decides to innocently call itself something that helps you connect and share with people in your life.  Connect? Okay. Good enough. Share? Umm! Let's not go there at the moment.  The facts that follow are about Facebook, gathered from all over the web.  Some of these facts include statistical details, which are obviously subject to change as we age.  However, it is the interpretation of these facts that gives us some delightful insights on the very premise of the sensation that is social networking.  Being the social wonder that it is, FB has thrown up some very interesting points for us to ponder upon.

Putting up these facts in flowcharts, graphs and diagrams would only be possible for the academically inclined.  Those belonging to the academically challenged lot, like yours truly, have to resort to underhand methods like sneaking up on Facebook's brain.  But sneak up I did, and I came across a huge pile of, what else but inscrutable computer babble.  Making sense of it involved taking some really massive creative liberties, so whatever you begin reading from here on requires a hearty sense of humor.

Since Facebook doesn't really allow itself to have a Facebook profile, here are 25 of the silliest things about FB:

  • Though that botched up IPO attempt hurt FB big time, FB can easily count around 350 million active members, and FB is still counting.

  •
  • FB has got a disorder named after him called…what else but Facebook Addiction Disorder.

  •
  • They say that FB has been instrumental in bringing about a rise in the number of divorces/failed relationships.

  •
  • FB’s humble presence is said to have increased the incidence of bad grades in school children.

  •
  • FB is selectively prudish. Breastfeeding mothers freak FB out big time. But hey, FB is totally okay with eating disorder groups.

  •
  • China, Egypt, Iran, Syria and Vietnam hate FB enough to have imposed a ban on FB at some point.

  •
  • FB doesn’t believe in the word 'delete'.  FB loves to store your valuable memories till FB gets you on your knees, begging FB to destroy them.

  •
  • FB simply loves to make a mockery of the concept of Internet privacy.

  •
  • Policemen find FB useful to track the lawless lot, so do potential employers and prospective boyfriends/girlfriends.

  •
  • FB lets people poke each other a lot; every now and then.  If only they knew what it means…

  •
  • FB derives immense pleasure in preserving evidences of people's drunken mistakes.  What you put on Facebook, stays put on Facebook.

  •
  • FB moonlights as a stalking device for those who have been unceremoniously dumped; speaking of which, FB is phenomenally popular dumping ground as well.

  •
  • FB’s list of fans was earlier restricted to the younger lot.  These days they say FB is a big hit with the ladies aged 55 and older.  These changing times!

  •
  • Heard about that contagious disease called 'tagging'? This is where it all started!

  •
  • Thanks to FB, it is now possible for everyone to be friends with their elementary school teacher's third cousin's step-daughter's babysitter's pretty sister's pet iguana. Whoo-hoo!

  •
  • Remember that thick, fat line that separated what was appropriate from the inappropriate? As a part of FB’s fair policies, FB made it a point not to discriminate between the two.

  •
  • Do you want to know which Jersey Shore character you resemble? Which Kardashian are you? Which piranha species you're most likely to belong to? Which Nicki Minaj hairdo are you? FB reveals the answers to all of life's greatest mysteries right here!

  •
  • FB loves to snoop. Your private conversations, messages and chats help FB bring in advertisers and enable FB to make more money.  Not for nothing that FB is Beacon of good fortunes.

  •
  • For the record – FB does not have a sense of humor and FB hates everything that begins with 'lame' and ends with 'book'.

  •
  • FB people share more than 25 billion pieces of information with FB every month.  Is it any surprise then that FB is like a second home to so many?

  •
  • People collectively spend approximately 3 billion minutes on FB everyday.

  •
  • FB’s obscure origins involve a lawsuit and an out-of-court settlement.  Cheeky, FB knows.

  •
  • FB employee hoodies fetch fat sums on eBay.  Higher even, if it hasn't been washed.  Oooh!!!  Facebook employee perspiration…

  •
  • FB really craves your Likes! Like me! Please, Please Like Me!

Neuroscience Of Human Vision

Rose

Rose

Visual recognition processing has been typically viewed as a bottom-up hierarchy, in which information is processed sequentially with increasing complexities where lower-level cortical processors, such as the primary visual cortex are at the bottom of the processing hierarchy and higher-level cortical processors, such as the inferotemporal cortex are at the top, where recognition is facilitated.  A most recognized bottom-up hierarchical theory is David Marr’s theory of vision.

In contrast, an increasingly popular recognition processing theory is that of top-down processing.  One model, proposed by Moshe Bar, describes a “shortcut” method in which early visual inputs are sent, partially analyzed, from the early visual cortex to the prefrontal cortex. Possible interpretations of the crude visual input is generated in the prefrontal cortex and then sent to the inferotemporal cortex subsequently activating relevant object representations; which are then incorporated into the slower bottom-up process. This “shortcut” is meant to minimize the amount of object representations required for matching; thereby facilitating object recognition.

Lesion studies have supported this proposal with findings of slower response times for individuals with prefrontal cortex lesions, suggesting use of only the bottom-up processing.

Protect The Beauty Of Mother Earth

I am an environmental enthusiast in a public authority. I believe our war against climate change has to be waged from several sectors; technically, religiously, educationally, poetically…just to mention a few I like to send my message to people in different ways for them to appreciate the war we all are waging…the war against environmental insanity!

Mankind! Long before your birth, alluring was the beauty of Mother Earth.  She bore living things of all kinds…plants and insects, animals and birds.  All, an exotic reflection of her biodiversity, a diversity you have chosen to destroy! Onto the face of the earth you strolled in, bringing up the rear in all her children.  You were meant to be the pride of all creation, but you chose to be the bane of life by bringing destruction.  To all life, Mother Earth has been so kind! Like the mother hen she nurtured her little chicks with affection, as she toiled to provide food season after season with dedication.  Even to you Mankind, she gave the best in proportion only to be sentenced by your actions in damnation!

You were created to walk but you chose to walk and fly! If only you flew like a bird, it might just have been perfect.  But No! You fly in all sorts exuding all sorts.  Now Mother Earth is filled with all sorts because you choose to ride in all sorts.  You have an insatiable desire to acquire.  You plunder the earth with impunity, oil, coal and iron you chase in disunity, fighting even your own kind for control and quantity just to live a life of environmental insanity!

Perhaps you have forgotten so soon! The La Niña drought of 2000, the heat wave in Europe in 2003, the tragedy of the cyclone in Myanmar in 2008, the constant melting of polar ice caps, all a consequence of your actions and inactions! You leave the problems for tomorrow’s generation running away for your present tribulation.  When will you repent of your evil ways? When will you stop biting the hands that have fed you? When will you love mother earth like she loves you…? And stop writing her dirge with your actions? Mother earth looks upon you with her painful eyes sobbing and asking you…Why…Mankind…why?

Make Life Simple

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.  I imagined it would feel a lot like Thoreau’s cabin in the woods: minimal, modest, and quaint.

In our high-tech, fast-paced world, very little feels simple. I often long to find places that feel charming and uncomplicated.  I enjoy roaming through the mountains and seeing nostalgic pieces within and outside the cottages; a few wooden carriages, an oil burning stove, and a deep claw foot tub.

I always fantasize about living in a small village, with a self-contained community of people who all knew and supported each other.  It is something I’ve always romanticized. Instead of living in the hustle and bustle of our modern world, always consuming and pushing for the next big thing, we’d create with our hands and spend more time enjoying life’s simple pleasures together.  We would have access to everything we need within close proximity, and the vast world made seemingly larger through the web would shrink in feel and yet expand in possibilities.

Not possibilities for earning money and succeeding professionally; possibilities for childlike joy and meaningful connection; the human wealth our tribal ancestors once enjoyed, before everything got bigger, faster, and automated.  Let us say something noteworthy that make others thank you.  Let us be considerate and understanding, something that comes naturally to humans.

I fantasize about not a world without commercialism or technology; I enjoy parts of both of those things.  It is a world where we don’t let our everyday stresses taint our interactions; a time and place where the most important thing is how we treat each other.  We often blame progress for the things we feel are wrong with the world, and this type of thinking isn’t entirely misguided. Many of our advances as a society have created as many problems as they’ve solved.  But in the end, it all comes back to us. Change Starts With Us.

I plan to highlight how we can recapture the simplicity of the past, when people weren’t quite as consumed with the pursuit of wealth and status. Human nature hasn’t fundamentally changed. Historically, we’ve always wanted to provide for our needs as best we can; and there’s always been the potential to get distracted and forget what’s important.  No matter how complex our world becomes, we can always choose to value people more than stuff. We can always choose to focus more of the quality of our interactions than the quantity of our achievements.

That’s what makes life simpler; choosing to prioritize the little things, and realizing just how big they are.

The Laughter Of The Loon

Loons are very elegant birds, and quite whimsically unique as well. They sing songs of laughter during the warm seasons, yet remain silent through the winter months. Their melodious song, when they choose to sing, has a hauntingly mysterious echoing sound that clearly distinguishes them from other birds. They truly seem to be laughing aloud. Seeing them in the wild is an experience everyone should enjoy from time to time.

The Laughter Of The Loon

The secrets of remote lagoon

From morning’s blush of dawn,

Till rise of eve’s nocturnal moon

Sung by her eerie song.

Such wonderment from wint’ry surd,

Soliloquy’s mere tune.

Grand jubilance in summer’s heard –

Uncommon sounds the loon.

Bespeckled pinions, grace in flight,

Resplendent is her plume.

Bemusing splash to see her light

Cavort about the flume.

Her serenade’s a proud regale,

A songbird so unique.

How wondrous her falsetto wail

Reechoing mystique.

I’ll not divulge the secret song

Of this remote lagoon.

I’d rather hearken years along

The laughter of the loon.

LOVE LEAD NATURE

It is an acrostic sonnet, where the first letter of each line forms the title.
Love is like the damask rose
Once smitten, bound by its charm
Vividly feeling nature so close
Every moment makes feelings warm

Learn about being a better thyself
Essence of love shall make you fonder
As the flower enriches the world, it enriches itself
Deeply touched by its wonder

Nurtured scent of the damask fills the air
Acutely mesmerizing mind, heart and soul
The sweetness that pulls those with the flair
Ultimate pure happiness without any foul
Relish the true beauty of divine nature
Earthy wonders lead to blissful future.
